Physical classes from standard 1 to 9 and that of standard 11 will remain closed in Mumbai from Tuesday, January 4 till January 31 in the wake of rapidly rising COVID-19 cases in the city and threat of Omicron variant of Coronavirus, informed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday.
As per the notification issued by the civic body, physical classes of standard 10 and 12 will however continue. According to Rajesh Kankal, Education officer, BMC, students will be called only for the vaccination drive within the schools for students in the age-group 15 to 18. This will be applicable for both government as well as private schools.
The State government last week had said that it has not planned on closure of schools. The rapid increase in the number of cases however seem to have alerted the administration which issued the orders on January 3.
On Monday, the BMC kick-started vaccination drive for children in the age-group of 15 to 18. The civic body has designated nine vaccination centers for the same where students can either walk-in or pre-register online for the vaccine dose. The civic body aims to vaccinate nine lakh students in this age group in this drive.
