
Pune news and live updates: 12,160 fresh Covid-19 cases with 60 new Omicron infections were detected in Maharashtra on Monday. The state also reported 11 related deaths and 1,748 recoveries in the past 24 hours. Out of the new Omicron cases, 17 were reported from Pune.
The Covid-19 vaccination for children in the 15-18 age group began in Pune on Monday, with the teenagers being offered flowers, pens and masks after taking the jabs. According to the city civic body’s chief immunisation officer Dr Suryakant Devkar, the vaccination campaign for children commenced at 40 centres.
Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol formally launched the special drive at Dalvi Hospital, one of the 40 centres in the city, news agency PTI reported. “The beneficiary children were offered a rose, a pen and a mask after the vaccination,” Devkar said. Parents accompanied their children to the vaccination centres and the teenagers appeared happy and excited to take to jabs against the viral infection, he said. Each centre has been provided 250 doses of Covaxin. Half of these vaccine doses will be given to the children registering online, and the rest will be for on-the-spot arrivals, the official added.
Dr Ashish Lele, director, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), said Monday that the fast pace of digitisation will significantly affect the country’s science and technology sector. He was speaking at the 72nd foundation day function of CSIR-NCL.
“Startups working in deep technology and other areas are emerging. For R&D institutions like NCL, startups will be important vehicles in performing technology translation from the lab to the industry,” said Lele, who also shared the institute’s vision plan for 2020-2030.

A total of 19,583 youngsters in the age group 15 -18 were administered Covaxin vaccine. Of these 4,100 were from PMC, 1,947 from PCMC and 13,536 from Pune rural.

Shreya Lahane, a student of standard 10 in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Aundh, took her fist dose of Covaxin at PCMC hospital in Kasarwadi. Speaking about the experience she said, “Vaccines are life savers and I wanted to get my dose done before the examination starts in March. I do not have any fever or body pain and feel much safer even as the cases rise,’ she said. Lahane also added that she had booked the vaccination slot herself.
Unidentified persons broke into an apartment in Ambegaon Budruk and stole valuables worth Rs 3 lakh. The incident took place at an apartment at Mataji construction in Ambegaon Budruk between 7.30 am and 9 pm on January 1.
A 54-year-old woman resident of this apartment has lodged the complaint in this case at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station. Police said the complainant locked the house and went for her work in the morning. When she returned, she found that the lock latches of the main door were broken. Citing the Covid-19 surge, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) mayor Murlidhar Mohol will urge the district administration to shut the schools and stick to online classes as demanded by parents and doctors.
Mayor Murlidhar Mohol on Monday took a review of the Covid-19 situation in the city and the preparation to handle it. “There has been a surge in Covid-19 cases and the active case count has increased by four times within the last one week. Thus, the review was taken to prepare to handle the situation,” he said.

Covid-19 cases continued to rise rapidly in Pune with 850 new infections detected on Sunday as 16,346 samples were tested, a 34.7 per cent increase compared to the previous day, according to the data released by the health department of Pune Zilla Parishad. As many as 314 people recovered from the virus while two died, one each from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune rural.
Maharashtra reported 50 cases of Omicron variant on Sunday, of which 46 came from Pune district.

With number of Covid-19 cases, including that of the new variant Omicron, rising in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Patil has directed the officials of the PCMC to prepare for possibility of a third wave, officials said.
At an emergency meeting of top officials of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) held on Saturday, the civic body decided to restart the Auto Cluster Covid Hospital in Chinchwad and the Jumbo Covid Hospital at Nehrunagar. Besides, it has decided to make at least two Covid Care Centres functional in the area.

At Pune’s Kamala Nehru hospital the flow of youngsters remained unstoppable as the Covid-19 vaccination drive for those aged between 15 and 18 years commenced on Monday.
Rather than wait for the elevator 16-year-old Aryan Jadhav took the stairs to the fifth floor where names are registered and Nurse Surekha Gholap waits to inject the jab to the teenagers. “I am eager to take the vaccine shot as early as possible,” said Jadhav, a Class-XI student. His friend, Kanad Tamne (16), added that the vaccine will help us fight Covid.
As per the government policy, Covaxin is being administered to the 15 to 18 years age group. In the city, there are 40 centres which have the Covaxin doses.
