Pune news and live updates: Maharashtra on Monday recorded 12,160 fresh Covid-19 cases with 60 new Omicron infections. The state also reported 11 deaths and 1,748 recoveries in the past 24 hours. Out of the new Omicron cases, 17 were reported from Pune.

On the first day of vaccinating children aged 15-18, as many as 19,583 youngsters between 15 and 18 years of age in Pune region were administered anti-Covid vaccine. Of these, 4,100 teenagers were from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, 1,947 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and 13,536 from Pune rural.

In other news, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) mayor Murlidhar Mohol will urge the district administration to shut the schools and stick to online classes as demanded by parents and doctors due to the current Covid-19 situation.

Ensure vaccination for cane harvesters: Maharashtra’s sugar commissioner to mill owners

Maharashtra’s sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad, in a letter, has directed sugar mills to ensure vaccination for migrant cane harvesters in their area. The letter assumes importance as most of the cane harvesters have migrated from their villages and might end up missing their scheduled date for the second dose, officials said.

Around 5-6 lakh harvesters, mainly drawn from the districts of Beed, Jalgaon, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar, annually migrate to the sugar mills across the state. These workers stay at makeshift camps during the cane harvesting season, starting post-Diwali and return home once the season is over in April-May. During this period, almost all able-bodied men and women migrate to harvest cane. Read more

Vaccination for children Initial fears give way to enthusiasm as teenagers turn up at centres to get jab

As the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Monday kick-started the vaccination drive for children between 15 and 18 years of age, it was greeted with enthusiastic response from teenagers. While a small number was seen tense and nervous before taking the jab, a majority of them was unfazed and seemed eager to get themselves vaccinated to fight against Covid-19. As many as 1,947 teenagers received first dose of Covaxin on Day 1 without any adverse event.

Officials said in the first phase, 1.17 lakh children will be given the first dose of the vaccine.

The drive started around 10am at eight centres of the civic body. The centres include ESIC hospital, Mohannagar, Premlok Park dispensary, Masulkar Colony Eye hospital, New Thergaon Hospital, Thergaon, Old Bhosari Hospital, Urdu school, Yamunanagar, New Jijamata Hospital, Pimpri and Kasarwadi dispensary. Pimpri Chinchwad: Youth sets police vehicles on fire, pelts stones; cop injured

A destitute man allegedly set afire four police vehicles at the Chikhli police station in Pimpri Chinchwad in the early hours of Monday. He also damaged a few more vehicles and pelted stones at the police, injuring one constable.

The accused fled the scene after the incident.

The police identified the accused as a youth in his early 20s who lives near the station. The police suspects he resorted to arson and vandalism after he was reprimanded for loitering around the premises. Read more

With 727 new infections, Pune reports small dip in Covid-19 cases

Pune reported a small dip in new Covid-19 cases on Monday, recording 727 cases compared to 850 cases on Sunday, according to the data released by the Health Department of Pune Zila Parishad. As many as 331 patients recovered fully from the virus during the day while two deaths were reported, one each from Councils (NP) and Pune rural.

Of the 727 cases, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported 444 cases followed by Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) (149), Pune rural (87), Councils (NP) (37) and Cantonment (10). Read more

Air quality to be in 'severe' category in parts of Pune city

The air quality around Vimanagar and neighbourhoods on Tuesday would be 'severe' while Kothrud and Shivajinagar will experience 'poor' air quality. The city's air quality will be 'moderate' and the expected AQI is 145.

Clear sky conditions will turn cloudy post afternoon.  

The maximum temperature would hover around 30 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures recorded on the day were Pashan - 13.5 degrees, Shivajinagar - 14.2 degrees, Lohegaon - 15.4 degrees and Magarpatta - 18.3 degrees.

Want to complete first-dose Covid vaccination by month-end, no call yet on closing schools: Minister

Youngsters eagerly line up for Covid vaccine jab on first day

Shreya Lahane, a student of standard 10 in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Aundh, took her fist dose of Covaxin at PCMC hospital in Kasarwadi. Speaking about the experience she said, “Vaccines are life savers and I wanted to get my dose done before the examination starts in March. I do not have any fever or body pain and feel much safer even as the cases rise,’ she said. Lahane also added that she had booked the vaccination slot herself.

Pune: Daytime house break-in, valuables worth Rs 3 lakh stolen

Unidentified persons broke into an apartment in Ambegaon Budruk and stole valuables worth Rs 3 lakh. The incident took place at an apartment at Mataji construction in Ambegaon Budruk between 7.30 am and 9 pm on January 1.

A 54-year-old woman resident of this apartment has lodged the complaint in this case at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station. Police said the complainant locked the house and went for her work in the morning. When she returned, she found that the lock latches of the main door were broken. She then discovered that Rs 1 lakh cash and gold ornaments, all worth Rs 3,01,500, were missing. (ENS)

Citing Covid surge, PMC mayor to press for shutting of schools

Citing the Covid-19 surge, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) mayor Murlidhar Mohol will urge the district administration to shut the schools and stick to online classes as demanded by parents and doctors.

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol on Monday took a review of the Covid-19 situation in the city and the preparation to handle it. “There has been a surge in Covid-19 cases and the active case count has increased by four times within the last one week. Thus, the review was taken to prepare to handle the situation,” he said.

Pune reports 850 new Covid-19 cases, 46 Omicron infections

Covid-19 cases continued to rise rapidly in Pune with 850 new infections detected on Sunday as 16,346 samples were tested, a 34.7 per cent increase compared to the previous day, according to the data released by the health department of Pune Zilla Parishad. As many as 314 people recovered from the virus while two died, one each from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune rural.

Maharashtra reported 50 cases of Omicron variant on Sunday, of which 46 came from Pune district.

Be ready for possibility of third wave, PCMC chief tells officials

With number of Covid-19 cases, including that of the new variant Omicron, rising in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Patil has directed the officials of the PCMC to prepare for possibility of a third wave, officials said.

At an emergency meeting of top officials of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) held on Saturday, the civic body decided to restart the Auto Cluster Covid Hospital in Chinchwad and the Jumbo Covid Hospital at Nehrunagar. Besides, it has decided to make at least two Covid Care Centres functional in the area.

Teenagers eager to get Covid vaccination at Pune’s Kamala Nehru Hospital

At Pune’s Kamala Nehru hospital the flow of youngsters remained unstoppable as the Covid-19 vaccination drive for those aged between 15 and 18 years commenced on Monday.

Rather than wait for the elevator 16-year-old Aryan Jadhav took the stairs to the fifth floor where names are registered and Nurse Surekha Gholap waits to inject the jab to the teenagers. “I am eager to take the vaccine shot as early as possible,” said Jadhav, a Class-XI student. His friend, Kanad Tamne (16), added that the vaccine will help us fight Covid.

As per the government policy, Covaxin is being administered to the 15 to 18 years age group. In the city, there are 40 centres which have the Covaxin doses.

A descendant of a soldier who was in 1824 appointed as in-charge of the Jaystambh has penned a book on the battle of Koregaon Bhima. The Jaystambh, a military monument at Perne village in Pune district, was erected by the East India Company in 1821 in memory of its soldiers who fought against the Maratha forces at Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 1818.

The British, on December 13, 1824, appointed soldier Kandojibin Gajoji Jamadar (Malvadkar), who was injured in the battle, as the in-charge of the Jaystambh. Now, his seventh-generation descendent, advocate Rohan Jamadar, from Pune has written a book in Marathi titled ‘1 January 1818 Koregaon Bhima Ladhaiche Vastav (Facts of the battle of Koregaon Bhima)’.
