In another development, the Income Tax department on Friday raided multiple premises including Samajwadi Party’s Pushpraj Jain’s linked to perfume traders as part of a tax evasion investigation, official sources told PTI. Searches are also being conducted in Kanpur, Kannauj, Delhi and few other places. The Income Tax department Friday conducted raids at premises of two leading Kannauj-based perfume traders, hours before Akhilesh Yadav was scheduled to hold a press meet. One of the two businessmen is a Samajwadi Party leader.

In a setback to the Samajwadi Party (SP), its MLC and former Uttar Pradesh minister Shatarudra Prakash joined the BJP at the saffron party's state headquarters here on Friday. A socialist since his student days, Prakash joined the BJP in the presence of the party's state unit chief Swatantra Dev Singh.
Prakash, who joined politics while studying in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1974 from Varanasi Cantonment as a Socialist Party nominee. "The earlier code for Jhansi railway station was 'JHS'. Now, with the name being changed to Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station, its code has been changed to 'VJLB', Chief Public Relations Officer of North-Central Railway, Shivam Sharma, who is based in Prayagraj, told PTI. The department is searching multiple locations of some entities linked to the perfume trade and related businesses, the sources said.
Lashing out at the Election Commission, the Congress Thursday asked it to consult health experts, seek data on COVID-19 from the government and take an independent decision on holding elections in five states rather than acting like a "toothless tiger".

In a statement issued here, the Uttar Pradesh BJP said Shah will visit the Hanumangarhi temple (in Ayodhya) on Friday at 10.30 am, and then will have a 'darshan' of Ram Lalla at 11.00 am. After this, at around 11.30 am, he will address a public meeting.
At 1.00 pm, Shah will address a public meeting in Sant Kabir Nagar. The Union minister is scheduled to hold a roadshow in Bareilly at 3.30 pm, and then address a public meeting in Bareilly at 5.00 pm.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on Thursday said all political parties in Uttar Pradesh want the Assembly elections to be held according to schedule while ensuring Covid protocol. The CEC also asked the state to step up coronavirus vaccination. The number of polling booths will be increased and the voting time enhanced by an hour, he said, adding polling officials will be vaccinated and those eligible will be given a booster dose.
Chandra said some parties have also expressed concern over hate speeches, paid news and "biased" officials. On a three-day visit to Lucknow to review preparations for the elections slated to be held before mid-March, Chandra held a series of meetings with representatives of political parties as well as state and district-level officials.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday claimed that while the previous state governments spent their money on burial grounds the BJP government works on developing religious spots, which boosts tourism and also generates employment.

Addressing a rally at Unnao in poll-bound UP, he said, "You have two options; BJP, which works for the development of every section of the society & BSP-SP of 'Bua-Babua'. When SP came, one caste progressed, when the BSP came, the other caste would progress. BJP works on the principle of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas," said at a rally at Unnao in UP.
He also alleged the Samajwadi Party opened fire on the people who participated in the Rath Yatra when L K Advani was leading the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
"Akhilesh babu, no matter how hard you try, I tell you that in a few months, a grand temple of Lord Shri Ram will be built," he added.
Newly-appointed Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Durga Shankar Mishra assumed charge here on Thursday and said he would work diligently to take various schemes of the government to people.
Mishra, a 1984-batch IAS officer who was due to retire on December 31, was given the important responsibility ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
Mishra, who was the Union housing and urban affairs secretary, was repatriated to his parent cadre Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday as the Yogi Adityanath government proposed to appoint him as the new chief secretary, barely two days before his retirement. He took over from Rajendra Kumar Tiwari, a 1985-batch IAS officer who is due to retire in February 2023. Mishra has been given a one-year extension in service. (PTI)

In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, voter turnout in UP was 59%. It a matter of worry why voting percentage is less in the state where there is high political awareness among people."
