Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket drama '83' had made Rs 47 crore at the box office in three days since its release, the makers said on Monday. The Kabir Khan-directorial chronicles the Indian cricket team's fascinating 1983 World Cup victory.
Presented by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films, '83' opened to glorious reviews.
With a big budget and brilliant star cast, the film was expected to script box office history, but many believe the box office collection of the movie has been a damper.
Film critic Taran Adarsh was disappointed to see the business made by the cricket drama. He said that while the movie saw slight growth in the non-metro cities on Day 3, it wasn't enough to cover the lost ground.
He also hoped to see a massive jump on the Christmas weekend (Day 2 and Day 3), but it didn't translate to that.
The movie analyst said that the film's non-performance has been a shock since there was a lot of anticipation and it comes with a big price tag too.
The movie, released last week on Friday (December 24), is running in 3,741 screens in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
Sharing the day-wise data, he said that it earned Rs 12.64 crore on Friday, Rs 16.95 crore on Saturday, and Rs 17.41 crore on Sunday - which makes it a total of Rs 47 cr.
He also said that the movie is facing tough competition from 'Spider-Man 3' and Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa' in Hindi.
It is yet to be seen if the film will pace up in the coming days, but the new releases calendar also looks promising with Shahid Kapoor-starrer 'Jersey' on Friday (December 31), and SS Rajamouli's multi-starrer 'RRR' on January 7.
"The fact is '83' has limited time to score," he wrote.
Adarsh also shared the movie's box office collection from the overseas market.
'83' has made a total of $3.48 million (approximately Rs 26.16 crore) since its release on Thursday.
On Day 1, it made $1.57 million, $1.01 million on Day 2, and $900,000 on Day 3.
'83' also stars Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa and R Badree.
