Chandigarh Municipal Election 2021 Results: In a massive boost for the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab, it won 14 of the 35 wards in Chandigarh, a city administered by the Centre and ruled by the BJP, results for which were declared on Monday. The BJP, which had swept the last Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls winning 21 of 26 wards, ended second, with 12. The Congress won eight wards and the Akali Dal 1.
As the Aam Aadmi party emerged as the surprise frontrunner in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, senior leader of the party Raghav Chadha said that it was a “victory of Kejriwal’s model of governance as people were yearning for a change for years”.
Nine counting centres were set up for 35 wards of the municipal corporation, and counting began at 9 am.
The polling percentage remained at 60.45 per cent this year, which was held on December 24. Traditionally, the municipal election – held every five years – has seen a locking of horns between the BJP and the Congress, but the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party made the contest this time triangular.
The BJP is likely to play the role of senior partner in its alliance with Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa's SAD (Sanyukt) in Punjab, and the coalition is unlikely to project any chief ministerial face in the run-up to the election, sources said on Monday.
Former Punjab chief minister Singh and former Union Minister Dhindsa on Monday met the BJP top leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda here.
After the meeting at Shah's residence, the BJP's Punjab incharge and Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat formally announced that all three parties will contest elections and will come up with a common manifesto. (PTI)
Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Monday said his party, the BJP and the SAD (Sanyukt) have come together in the interest of national security and progress of the state, and claimed that the coalition will win next year's Assembly polls. Amarinder Singh had quit the Congress after his unceremonious exit as the CM and launched his party the Punjab Lok Congress.
"I am happy that we have come together in the interest of the national security, welfare and progress of Punjab," Amamrinder Singh said after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J P Nadda and the SAD (Sanyukt) chief Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in New Delhi.
The former chief minister said he is happy that the three parties agreed to fight the elections together with a mission to bring back glory to Punjab. "With the BJP governments both at the Centre and in the state, Punjab will be on an irreversible trajectory of growth and development driven by a double engine," he said in a statement. (PTI)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on January 5 to lay the foundation stone of PGI satellite centre at Ferozepur. This will be his first visit to the state after the repeal of the farm laws.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is slated to visit Punjab on January 3.
It was an outcome which no one had imagined. In a city like Chandigarh, which is administered by Centre, and has always been ruled either by Congress or BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) winning the most number of seats in the civic polls came as a major surprise on Monday.
AAP won 14 seats, BJP came second with 12, while Congress won in eight wards and the Akali Dal in one.

"People of Chandigarh have proved that in a democracy, people are supreme, not leaders. Despite having Mayor, Chandigarh administration (Governor) and PM from BJP, the people of Chandigarh have trusted the AAP. People of Punjab have also made up their minds. People want development," said Bhagwant Mann in a press conference after AAP won the Chandigarh civic polls.
Former Mohali mayor Kulwant Singh joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the presence of party leaders Bhagwant Maan and Raghav Chadha on Monday. Kulwant is the likely candidate of AAP from Mohali constituency for the assembly elections next year.
