SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia (file) Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, booked under the NDPS Act, on Monday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
His bail plea had earlier been dismissed by a district court in Mohali on December 24. The matter is now expected to come up for hearing before the HC on Wednesday.
The plea in HC moved by Majithia’s counsel — senior advocate RS Cheema and advocates Arshdeep Singh Cheema, Damanbir Singh Sobti and Somnath Tayal — submitted that “to target the applicant/petitioner is one of the major election planks of the current government” led by the Congress in Punjab.
In his bail plea, Majithia has submitted that the Congress government had “left no stone unturned to misuse its powers and position for wreaking vengeance upon its political opponents”.
The plea reads: “To target the applicant/petitioner is one of the major election planks of the current government. To fulfil its election stunt, the Congress government of the state of Punjab has been day and night browbeating officers to register false cases against the senior leadership of the Shiromani Akali Dal including the applicant/petitioner”
The petition further alleges that in the run-up to the polls, witch-hunting of the political opponents has gone to its peak.
Taking on the current Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, the petition alleges that “he has been appointed, as is well known, to please the Punjab Pradesh Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, the arch political rival of the petitioner, and….to act as a tool to advance the political interests of the present government”.
The petition further alleges that Sidhu has been aggressively indulging in unwarranted propaganda against the petitioner on the question of drugs in the state of Punjab.
