Star opening batsman KL Rahul admitted that he thought his Test career was over that he would never play test cricket again. Rahul has been named Test vice-captain for the youth Africa tour in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is out of the South Africa Test Series due to a hamstring injury.

The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday released a video, in which Rahul can be seen having chat with his Karnataka teammate and his opening partner for the South Africa tour, Mayank Agarwal. While talking with Mayank, Rahul said that he thought he would never play Test cricket again until six or, seven months ago, Rahul said that he is very grateful that he got a new lease of life in the longest format and now he only wants to carry on the good work.

During the 2019 cricketing season, Rahul was dropped from the Test team due to his continuous poor form and did not get the opportunity to play a single Test match until this year in August against England in Nottingham. Team India management called him for the England tour when both openers Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal got injured and there was not another batsman to open the innings with Rohit Sharma.

When given the opportunity, Rahul resurrected his Test career with some outstanding knocks, including 84 in Nottingham and 129 at the Lord’s. He played a key role in India’s victory in Lord’s and was named player of the match for his century. This time again in the South Africa Test series, in the absence of regular opener Rohit Sharma, Rahul has a fine opportunity to establish himself as the opening batsman in Test cricket.

India will play the first test of the three-match series against South Africa from December 26, in Jo’Burg. The Indian team has never won a Test series in South Africa. Earlier in 2018, when India toured South Africa, Proteas handed a 2-1 defeat to the Kohli-led team.
