'83 box office collection early estimate: Ranveer Singh's sports drama is off to a flying start with 45 per cent occupancy on Day 1

Ranveer Singh starrer ’83 has recorded a decent start at the box office. The sports drama narrates the story of the Indian cricket team’s victory during the 1983 world cup. Directed by Kabir Khan, the entertainer recorded an occupancy of 40-45 per cent in big metros. The film registered a positive trend in multiplexes across Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore. However, the opening numbers beyond these circuits is in the low range of 10-30 percent.

The overall opening of ’83 is expected to be low because of its grand magnitude. The sports flick is expected to record a slow opening in Surat, Lucknow and Jaipur. The film released in 3300 plus screens and the ’83 is expected to get a massive push in collection because of the festive Christmas weekend. Apart from Hindi, ’83 has also been released in several South languages too, in around 300-400 theatres.

Ahead of the film’s release, Deepika Padukone, who is also producing the movie, visited Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Temple to seek blessings. She ahd also dropped a video on Instagram, expressing her excitement ahead for the film. "It’s incredible and this is how I define ‘83’. For me, ‘83’ is not a film, it’s an emotion. It’s an experience. I don’t think you can define what you feel when you come out of the cinema halls watching this film. They (audience) are laughing with joy, they are crying, they are speechless… I don’t think anyone’s really being able to articulate what they feel or what this movie makes you feel when you come out of the theatres,” Deepika had shared.

’83 stars Ranveer Singh in the role of former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who led the winning squad. Speaking about the film, Kabir Khan had exclusively told ETimes, “You know, 83 is a big responsibility for me. I knew if I don't recreate this correctly, the country will not forgive me. Ditto for Ranveer: If he won't portray Kapil correctly, the audience will not forgive him. And as you see from the trailer, he has done it brilliantly. He worked very hard.” ‘83 also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa and R Badree in pivotal roles.
