A two-year-old girl has died in a fire in Zinnie Street in Sarepta, Kuils River, on Thursday.

Two other people sustained seriously burns and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services Jermaine Carelse said their teams were alerted to the fire at about 23:30 on Thursday.

"Crews from Kuils River, Belhar and Bellville fire stations were quickly on scene and found two structures fully engulfed in flames," he said.

He said:

A young girl died, and two adults suffered serious injuries when an informal structure caught fire. Sadly, the body of the girl had suffered fatal burn wounds, was discovered inside the structure.

Carelse said a man and a woman, who suffered serious burn wounds, were treated and taken to a nearby hospital.

The fire was extinguished just before 00:30 and the scene was handed over to the police.

SAPS spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said Kuils River police were investigating.

"According to reports, police members on patrol saw the fire and attended to the scene. They found two burned victims (male and female) lying outside the premises on the grass. They immediately contacted the Fire Department. When the fire was extinguished, the body of a two-year-old child (girl) was found in the burned-out structure," he said.

It is unknown how the fire started.

Ward councillor Wouter de Vos told News24 that he was "saddened" by the loss of life of a young child.

He said:

Whilst loss of life and injury is always traumatic, it is so worse during this time of the year. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved, and we wish those injured a full and complete recovery.

He said Disaster Management was on the scene to assist.

"The wonderful community of Kuilsrivier will rally around those affected by the fire and they can count on our love and caring support as they deal with this tragic event," added De Vos.
