Former fast bowler Allan Donald is waiting with bated breath for the upcoming Test series between South Africa and India, which he believes will be a closely contested battle between two outstanding teams under Dean Elgar and Virat Kohli. India will be gunning for their first-ever Test series win in South Africa when the two teams lock horns in opening match in Centurion on December 26. It will be followed by the second Test at Wanderers in Johannesburg from January 3 to 7 and third Test at Newlands in Cape Town from January 11 to 15.
“There is no doubt this is one of the marquee series in the world game and we can look forward to an incredible battle over the summer. This is a quality Indian team that is here. I’m looking forward to it,” Donald, who played 72 Tests and took 330 wickets, said on Cricket South Africa’s official website. Donald, who was one of the fastest bowlers in the world, also recalled Test captain Kohli’s comments in terms of performing overseas, believing it worked in transforming his team into a formidable side.
“Kohli’s comments a few years ago were that you’ll never be classed as a great side if you don’t win away from home and that has been something he really worked towards. You saw them win in Australia and also reach the WTC (World Test Championship) Final,” Donald added. Donald also pointed out that South Africa’s inexperienced batting lineup will be put to test against the lethal Indian bowling attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin.
“For me that is where the series will be decided. In the last few seasons, we haven’t scored enough runs and that will be the challenge. If we can put the runs on the board, we undoubtedly have the bowlers who can take 20 wickets. There is a really good balance to our attack, and it will be interesting to watch. “Both teams line up really well, both have strong bowling line-ups and that will mean the batting on both sides will be tested. Our batting has lost some key players in the last couple of seasons. There’s no hiding from the fact that it’s a young line-up and they will be tested by the Indian attack,” Donald said.
Australian head coach Justin Langer on Thursday hinted that Mitchell Starc will play the Boxing Day Test against England which gets underway from Sunday.
Australia are 2-0 up in the ongoing Ashes after winning the second Test at the Adelaide Oval and will meet England in the Melbourne Game on Sunday. Starc suffered discomfort while batting in the second Test against England when he attempted a slog sweep that put some pressure on his ribs. “It’s just [Starc’s] rib actually. A lot of the bowlers talk about when they come back to Test cricket, bowl more overs, they jam down on that rib area so he should be fine. He’s tough,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Langer. “If he’s not right, then we’ll look at it. But at this stage, there’s no indication suggesting he won’t be playing the next Test,” he added.
Langer, however, was unsure about pacer Josh Hazelwood’s inclusion for the third Ashes Test in Melbourne. “We will wait and see how Josh Hazlewood pulls up, he arrives this afternoon,” said Langer.
Eoin Morgan will captain a 16-player squad for England men’s T20I matches against West Indies next month.
Paul Collingwood will stand in as head coach for the five-match series, which will be played in Barbados from January 22-30. Marcus Trescothick will join the squad as an assistant coach. The squad includes 11 players who travelled to the United Arab Emirates for the T20 World Cup last November.
George Garton and David Payne are both uncapped players in the squad.
In an official release, Paul Collingwood said: “We have selected a strong squad with some serious batting power and a balanced attack as we begin preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.”
“The World Cup is less than a year away and there will be increased opportunities for the squad in the absence of those players who are with the Ashes squad. I have good memories winning a World Cup in Barbados and I’m really looking forward to going back there with this squad to face a very good West Indies who will test all aspects of our skills,” he added.
England Squad: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex – captain), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Tom Banton (Somerset), Sam Billings (Kent), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), George Garton (Sussex), Chris Jordan (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Tymal Mills (Sussex), David Payne (Gloucestershire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Phil Salt (Lancashire), Reece Topley (Surrey), James Vince (Hampshire).
Spinner Ajaz Patel, who made history by taking all 10 wickets in an innings in the second Test against India in early December, has been dropped from the squad for New Zealand’s very next series against Bangladesh at home. Ajaz, 33, was only the third in the history of Test cricket to take all 10 wickets in an innings and ended the match with 14 wickets in nearly 67 overs that he bowled.
Rachin Ravindra, who also made an impression in the two-Test series in India, is the only spin bowling option that New Zealand have opted for in the 13-man squad. The series will be played in New Zealand and starts on New Year’s Day in Mount Maunganui.
Tom Latham will lead the side in the absence of the injured Kane Williamson. Williamson’s long-standing elbow injury had flared up during the T20 World Cup in November, which led to him sitting out the subsequent T20I series against India. While he then played the first Test in Kanpur, he sat out the Mumbai Test, in which Latham was the captain of the team as well.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead had said after the first Test that Williamson could be out for a lengthy period, although it is unlikely that he will undergo surgery.
Ajaz walked back to a standing ovation from the Indian fans at the Wankhede Stadium after taking the 10th wicket during the second Test.
