BHUBANESWAR: To hone the skills of youths and make them employable, the Centre has approved six industrial training institutes (ITIs) and 10 skill development centres (SDCs) for six Left-wing extremism (LWE) affected districts of the state.

Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that 5,36,427 candidates have been trained in Odisha till date under the flagship scheme - Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). More students will get skill training to earn a livelihood with the help of vocational education.

He said several specific development schemes apart from flagship schemes of the Centre have been implemented in LWE affected areas, including Odisha to improve road and telecom connectivity, financial inclusion, skill development and education. Employment at the local level is generated with implementation of all such schemes, he added.

On skill development of students, Rai said the main strategy of the Aspirational Districts Programme is bringing convergence of existing schemes which have their own funding arrangements. To foster competitive spirit and address critical gaps, a provision of additional allocation is there for districts securing good ranks based on their monthly incremental progress. The first and second rankers in overall terms are awarded Rs 10 crore and Rs 5 crore respectively, he added.

The first ranker from each of the five sectors is awarded Rs 3 crore each. As per this method, the aspirational districts of Gajapati, Nuapada, Balangir, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Koraput have been sanctioned a cumulative amount of approximately Rs 43.3 crore for projects formulated by the districts in sectors line, including health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water resources and financial inclusion and skill development.

Odisha has 48 government ITI colleges, 589 private ITIs and 260 training centres. But very few are located in Naxal-affected areas. The directorate general of training (DGT) under the aegis of ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) grades the ITIs.
