England drop a catch before Broad takes a lovely one

Not that it matters a great deal given how much damage Australia have already inflicted but Ollie Pope has dropped an extremely difficult chance in the deep.

Moments later, Michael Neser skies a ball and Broad takes a good catch. The debutant receives a warm applause from his home crowd after making 35 from 24 balls.

Australia 8-448, surely a handful of overs away from a declaration.

Neser smashes Woakes

The debutant is 27 from 18 balls!

He’s just hit two fours off Woakes, one that is heaved down towards the mid-wicket boundary, before hitting a six over extra cover. What an unbelievable cut shot. 16 runs off the over. The local crowd are loving this.

Australia 7-433

Should Mark Wood have played this Test?

Meanwhile, Starc and Neser have lifted the tempo in the last 10 minutes or so, with a declaration on the cards you’d imagine. They’re both on 17 and have put on 32 runs.

England’s bowlers have struggled in this series

Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes have been the pick of the bowlers today. Stokes’ delivery to remove Cameron Green was an absolute beauty, while Anderson’s dismissal of Smith was very important and a little unexpected given how well Australia’s second drop was seeing the ball.

400 up for Australia!

From 46 first innings totals at the Adelaide Oval (in the first innings of the match), this doesn’t even rank in the top half for Australia. 26th from 46.

Neser also has his first runs in Test cricket. Am very intrigued to see how he goes with the pink ball under lights.

Neser faces his first ball in Test cricket

We’re back in the middle for the final session of day two, with debutant Michael Neser and left-arm quick Mitchell Starc doing their best to get Australia beyond 400.

Our poll below has produced some interested results. Australia would love to bat for another hour if they could.

Neser blocks his first ball and clips his second off his pads but can’t get off the mark.

Carey departs for 51 on the stroke of tea

Carey can’t kick on after posting a maiden Test half century. He spoons a catch to Hameed at cover to a ball that appears to have slowed up a little bit from the bowling of Jimmy Anderson.

Australia 7-390

Carey has a half century to his name!

Australia’s wicketkeeper raises his bat for the first time in Test cricket. His knock has come from 102 deliveries and it has been very polished indeed.

That will give Carey immense confidence that he belongs at this level after a long time waiting in the wings.

Smith gone for 93!

Steve Smith’s fine innings has come to an end after being trapped in front by Jimmy Anderson for 93. It’s the veteran’s first wicket of the tour.

At first glance it looked like the ball might have struck Smith outside the line of off stump but ball tracker shows it was ‘umpire’s call’ for where it hit him in line. On-field umpire Rod Tucker initially gave Smith out, so the decision stands.

Mitchell Starc is the new man to the crease.

This isn’t a big total yet by Adelaide Oval standards

Have just done some digging to see how this total ranks in history for Australia at the Adelaide Oval in the first innings of a Test.

Hint: not too high, yet.

In Test cricket, Australia have batted first 46 times at the Adelaide Oval.

This total of 5-375 is ranked 31st of 46. It just goes to show how well Australia performs on home soil.

Australia’s biggest totals here have been 674 against India in 1948, 7-604 against India in 2012, 3-589 against Pakistan in 2019, 8-575 against New Zealand in 2004 and all out 573 against England in 1898.

HOWEVER, this is a pink ball Test, which of course means batting is a little trickier, because some of takes place under lights.

Meanwhile, Rory Burns has just had a shy at the stumps, which has raced to the boundary for five runs. Stuart Broad is ropeable.
