‘Students finding it difficult to read & write in mother tongue’

HYDERABAD: The problem is not just with maths or English, students are also finding it difficult to read and write in their mother tongue, revealed a survey conducted by National Independent Schools Alliance (NISA). In the survey, in which 1,502 students from various states have been tested in reading, writing, and comprehension and assessed in the mother tongue of each state and English, mother tongue challenges in reading were observed in all the zones.


City students with 30% show their inability to read their mother tongue, while 24% rural students had the same problem. It was further noted that the mother tongue challenges were more observed in primary classes and continued with marginal improvement in middle and secondary school.

Writing skills in the mother tongue are found to be a major concern with 35% of city students falling below one-class (29%) and below two-class (6%) levels.
