Two police officers are among four people who have appeared in court in connection with a stock theft case in KwaZulu-Natal.

The officers and their two alleged accomplices were allegedly behind the theft of three sheep in the Winterton area, said police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.

"The police received information regarding sheep that were stolen at a farm in Winterton between 1 and 12 December 2021. Two males, a 16-year-old and Xolani Mazibuko, 29, were questioned regarding the stolen livestock," Gwala said.

The investigation led police to the home of Constable Nkosinathi Ngubane, 31, who is stationed at the Winterton police station, and he was questioned.

"The team proceeded to the home of Constable Mlungisi Mshengu, 37, where three stolen sheep were found in a chicken pen. The recovered sheep were positively identified by the lawful owner," said Gwala.

Mshengu is also stationed at the Winterton police station.

All four accused were arrested and charged with stock theft. They all appeared in the Colenso Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

They were each granted R2 000 bail. The matter was postponed to 20 January 2021.

"This arrests are a testament that we will leave no stone unturned when crime is committed. We will not tolerate police officers who are involved in criminal activities and hide behind the police badge," said Gwala.
