Western Cape police arrested two armed robbers during a robbery at a farm in Wellington on Thursday morning.

The robbers were apprehended after a shootout with police. An officer was wounded.

Police were alerted to an armed robbery in progress involving five suspects, said police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut.

The robbers allegedly approached a farmer at his home and demanded cash at around 09:50.

"[Officers] reacted to the information, and upon their arrival in Commissioner Street, the fleeing suspects opened fire at police, who retaliated. One of our members sustained a gunshot wound to his ankle and received medical attention," said Traut.

"Two of the suspects were apprehended and were found in possession of a firearm and an imitation firearm, which were confiscated," he added.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.

Police were searching for three robbers who managed to evade arrest and made off with a small amount of cash.

The wounded police officer was in a stable condition, Traut added.
