Worst effects of logging flaw yet to be experienced: security pro Featured

Satnam Narang: "We anticipate that threat actors will soon begin utilising Log4Shell in their playbooks, potentially to be used by a ransomware group at some point." Supplied

A senior security professional says the vulnerability in the Log4j Java-based logging library is comparable to both the Heartbleed and Shellshock flaws that have come to light over the last decade, but the new vulnerability is more devastating.

Satnam Narang, a staff research engineer at security firm Tenable, told iTWire in response to queries that Log4j, an unauthenticated remote code exploit, allows the complete takeover of systems using versions 2.0-beta9 up to 2.14.1 of the library, would have a much greater impact and was easier to exploit.

"We're still in the early days of this vulnerability. Much of the activity that we've seen thus far has been exploratory and some exploitation, but on a more limited scale," he said.

"We anticipate that threat actors will soon begin utilising Log4Shell in their playbooks, potentially to be used by a ransomware group at some point. This is more akin to the calm before the storm."

Asked about the reluctance of proprietary software firms to fund the development of open-source software which they themselves used, often for vital functions, Narang said this should change.

"Organisations have built enterprise-scale apps by relying on the work of developers who volunteer their time," he pointed out.

"Without any incentive or motivation, many developers are unable to continue maintaining, updating or reviewing software they've written, which leads to security issues that sometimes cannot be detected early on.

"There's a lot of taking and very little giving which tips the balance severely. It would behoove organisations that utilise open-source software to consider investing the time and resources needed to make them more secure."
