COIMBATORE: A powerloom worker was murdered by his former employer in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as M Balasubramanian, 47, of Sedapalayam. He was unmarried.
Police said K Sundaramurthy, 38, had been running a powerloom unit eight years ago where Balasubramanian and some migrant workers were working. Balasubramanian instigated other workers to quit and find work in other powerloom units. Sundaramurthy came to know about this.
A quarrel arose between them, and Balasubramanian assaulted Sundaramurthy. Sundaramurthy, who was injured, lodged a complaint with the Palladam police against Balasubramanian.
Sundaramurthy, who was facing huge losses, closed the powerloom unit. He bought a goods autorickshaw and was engaged in supplying LPG gas cylinders in the locality.
Police said Sundaramurthy had thought that Balasubramanian was the reason for him closing the powerloom unit.
On Sunday morning, Sundaramurthy, who was under the influence of alcohol, found Balasubramanian at the Sedapalayam bus stop. He picked up a quarrel with him. In a fit of rage, Sundaramurthy assaulted Balasubramanian with a log.
Balasubramanian, who suffered injuries on his forehead, was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
The Palladam police registered an attempt to murder case and arrested Sundaramurthy on Sunday evening. He was produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
Around 11.30 pm on Sunday, Balasubramanian died without responding to treatment. The police altered the case to 302 (murder).
