A speeding car ran over a family of five sleeping on a footpath near Singh Dwar in the Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) area on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, leaving one of them critically injured and the others with minor injuries.
The seriously injured victim, Ranjeet, who was first referred to the Sector 6 Civil Hospital, is battling for his life at the PGI.
After selling brooms during the day, Naru Lal, his wife, mother, sister and brother-in-law, all natives of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, were asleep around 1 am when a rashly driven speeding car, bearing the registration number, HR03V-2902, ran over them and hit a pole.
According to an FIR, the car driver fled from the spot on foot following the incident, leaving the vehicle behind.
The family had arrived in Chandigarh on December 8 by train to sell date palm brooms. The police have impounded the car for investigation, the police said.
The police said the footage of CCTV cameras installed near the spot was being examined. The suspect would be nabbed soon, the police added.
A case has been registered against the unknown suspect under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code at the MDC police station.
