Chandigarh, December 10

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has allowed former MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira to amend a petition filed by him against the Union of India and other respondents following his arrest during the pendency of the matter.

In his plea placed before the Bench of Justice Ajay Tewari and Justice Pankaj Jain, Khaira through senior advocate Vikram Chaudhary with Keshavam Chaudhary submitted that he had challenged the initiation and continuance of proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. But the respondents arrested the petitioner during the pendency of the writ petition and he was still under arrest. As such, he was praying for quashing the remand orders. The Bench observed the senior counsel had stated at the very onset that the petitioner had moved an application for regular bail before the trial court. Consequently, it was not going to permit him to agitate the issue of bail at the present stage. — TNS
