Traffic signal repair work imperiling public

Imphal, December 09 2021: The state government has been unintentionally putting the people at risk while repairing the traffic light/signals installed at the traffic points of Imphal City.
The repair work for the traffic light/signals had been taken up a few months prior and the roads near the signals in Keishampat Junction, in front of Raj Bhavan, the Post Office, Kangla Western gate, North AOC, Chingmeirong and Singjamei have been dug up for burying wires underground for the said purpose.
However, the timing of the work is neither sensible nor practical.
Furthermore, after the wires are buried, the dug up earth is then filled again but not levelled properly, thereby causing potholes or depression in the earth.
As the aforementioned areas face heavy traffic jams every day, the potholes or the depressions create huge inconveniences to the commuters, even risking their lives, especially those who drive two-wheelers.
Although it is a good step on the part of the government in terms of improving the management of traffic, it would not be right to inconvenience the people or put them at risk of harm.
This would only reflect poorly on the government and its relevant authority.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, a commuter remarked that the government, while carrying out development works, should consider all components and aspects carefully so as to avoid causing inconvenience to the people.
There also seems to be miscommunication among departments such between the PWD and the PHED while laying pipes.
While it is laudable of the government to repair the traffic signals/lights, it should also ensure the holes that were dug up are properly filled and levelled.
By just leaving as it is, there are risk of causing accidents especially at night.
At that time, who will be held responsible, the commuter asked, while appealing to the government and the authority concerned to take serious note of the matter and ensure the work is carried out properly.
