Delhi Live News: Three weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the three farm laws and days after Parliament officially annulled them, protesting farmers brought the curtains down on their year-long agitation Saturday and began to vacate the protest sites at the Tikri and Singhu borders.
At the Tikri protest site, farmers spent most of Friday morning dismantling their makeshift tents, packing their belongings, and taking stock of items that had to be donated to the poor. Some farmers from Punjab’s Mansa district also decided to take memorabilia from their year-long protest that ended on Thursday — soil packed into tiny plastic jars and protest pamphlets safely tucked away into bags.
The year-long protest had presented an unprecedented political crisis for the NDA Government, including the loss of a key ally, and drawn the attention of the Supreme Court. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is an umbrella body of about 40 protesting farm unions, said that with the Centre agreeing to several demands, “the current agitation stands suspended”.
Earlier today, farmers performed 'ardas' at the protest site on Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Ghazipur before vacating the place.
The South district police on Thursday raided an illegal casino in the South Extension area and arrested 16 persons, including the son of a serving Assistant Commissioner of Delhi Police, allegedly involved in gambling activities. Initial investigation has revealed that the casino had been operating in M-Block of South Extension-II for the last nine months and was run by a father-son duo who are chartered accountants. They allegedly gave “protection money” of Rs 1.5 lakh to the local police.
