England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1 of the first Ashes Test. However, an inspired bowling attack, led by newly appointed captain Pat Cummins were out for blood as they skittled out England for 147. Cummins made headlines with his epic five-wicket haul, while Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood also chipped in with wickets as England offered little resistance.

Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope tried to fight their way through with a counter-attacking partnership but were sent back to the pavilion in quick succession in what was a day to remember for the Aussies.
