The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has offered its condolences to the four families that lost their loved ones in a terrible bus accident that rocked the netball community on Sunday.

Three netball players and an official died when a bus carrying two teams from the OR Tambo district was involved in an accident in Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape. The players were on their way to the National Netball Championships in Cape Town when the accident took place.

Sascoc president Barry Hendricks said their hearts were broken when they received the bad news.

"Our athletes are the backbone of sport and they work hard to excel in their different sporting disciplines," Hendricks said in a statement.

"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our netball players and an official during a time when netball athletes are preparing and looking forward to the 2023 Netball World Cup."

Sascoc chief executive officer Ravi Govender said the tragedy cut deep into their hearts as an organisation.

"We are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of the netball team members who were traveling on duty to compete at the National Championships," Govender said.

"It is tragic that our athletes' lives have been cut short so unexpectedly and we convey our sincere condolences and our sympathy to their families and the netball family."
