Tom Holland confirms he's playing Fred Astaire in an upcoming biopic for Sony Pictures and Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal

With his new movie Spider-Man: No Way Home hitting theaters later this month, star Tom Holland has confirmed his next project.

The 25-year-old actor was promoting the superhero sequel (via AP), in theaters December 17, when he was asked about rumors that he was playing Fred Astaire.

'Oh I am playing Fred Astaire, yeah,' Holland confirmed to reporters at an event for Spider-Man: No Way Home in London on Sunday.

'The script came in a week ago,' Holland told reporters, though he added, 'I haven't read it yet. They haven't given it to me.'

He added that he knows producer Amy Pascal, 'has the script,' adding that she, 'FaceTimed me earlier. I was in the bath,' with a laugh.

He added that they had, 'a lovely FaceTime, but I will be playing Fred Astaire,' he confirmed.

It was first mentioned that Holland might be playing Fred Astaire in a November GQ profile, proclaiming Holland as the 'superhero of the year.'

A representative for Sony Pictures confirmed to Variety that the Fred Astaire biopic is in 'very early stages' of development.  

Astaire is considered to be the greatest dancer in film history, performing on film, television and on the Broadway stage in a career spanning just over 75 years.

He is best known for his musicals with his on-screen partner Ginger Rogers, which also responsible for revolutionizing how dancing was captured on film.

No writer or director has been confirmed for the Fred Astaire biopic, nor has the film's title at this time. 

This is actually the second Fred Astaire biopic to be happening, with another project in the works at Amazon starring Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley as Astaire and Rogers, with that project focusing on their successful partnership.

Holland is well versed in song-and-dance, having started his career on the London stage, playing the title character in Billy Elliot on the West End from 2008 to 2010.

The actor went viral back in 2017, dancing to a mash-up of Singin' In the Rain from Gene Kelly's musical, and Rihanna's Umbrella. 

He'll next be seen in the highly-anticipated video game adaptation Uncharted, which hits theaters February 18.
