Sensex drops 500 points, Nifty below 17,100; IT & auto worst sectoral losers; India VIX surges 4%

Benchmark indices kicked off the weak on a tepid note as Omicron fears continued to spook market bulls. IT and auto stocks tumbled the most while metal provided some support. Broader markets traded in tandem with benchmarks.
