Imphal, December 04 2021: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has said that the Central government has given positive response to the matter of upgradation of Manipur University of Culture (MUC) to a Central university.
Leishemba Sanajaoba disclosed this during Sankirtana Day celebration organised by Sankirtana Department of Manipur University of Culture at university's extension campus on Saturday.
Attending as chief guest of the event, Sanajaoba said that Manipur University of Culture is one among three existing cultural universities of the country but the university is facing acute shortage due to financial problem.
Accordingly, the matter of upgradation of Manipur University of Culture to a Central university was raised in the Parliament and the Central government has responded positively but awaiting nod of the state cabinet.
Once the state cabinet gives approval, process for upgradation would start soon, he added.
According to Leishemba Sanajaoba, Sankirtana figured among UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity list on December 4, 2013 and it was a laudable step that government declared the day as 'Sankirtana Day' as this will help in promotion and expansion of the unique art.
The event was also attended by MUC vice chancellor professor Paonam Gunindro as president while MUC registrar Laishram Radhakanta, exam coordinator Laimayum Devendrajit Sharma and deputy registrar Dr Lourembam Surjit were guests of honour.
