State has 78.4 km NH per 1000 sq km area

Imphal, December 02 2021: Manipur has a total length of existing national highway of 1,750 km which amounts to 78.4 km of NH constructed per 1000 sq km of area.
According to a written reply of minister for development of north east region (DoNER) G Kishan Reddy in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, a total of Rs 19,537.83 crore was spent in North East Region in the period 2016-17 to 2020-21 for construction of roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
The DoNER ministry, through its various schemes has sanctioned 68 road and bridge projects in NER worth Rs 2,647.68 crore in the period 2018-19 to 2020-21.As per the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, up to October 2021, the length of National Highways (NH) per 1000 sq km of area in the NER is 52 km as compared to 40.2 km national average.
The length of NH in each of the NER states is more than the national average, except Arunachal Pradesh.
The average length per 1000 sq km is 78.4 km in Manipur, 49.8 km in Assam, 30.3 km in Arunachal Pradesh, 51.5, km in Meghalaya, 67.5 km in Mizoram, 93.4 km in Nagaland, 65.2 km in Sikkim and 81.4 km in Tripura.
The written reply also mentioned that Rs 158.56 crore was allocated by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for Manipur for the period of 2020-21 of which all the funds have been utilised.
