Studio 10 host Natasha Exelby accidentally offends Beau Ryan by mentioning one of the biggest regrets of his NRL career

She's known for her deadpan humour when she's not reading the news.

But journalist Natasha Exelby went a step too far with her jokes on Friday when she seemingly offended former NRL player Beau Ryan on Studio 10.

Exelby began talking about the excitement of having your first child when she asked Ryan if it compared to 'winning a State of Origin' - knowing full well he had never played in a State of Origin game.

'Beau, does it compare to winning a State of Origin because that also seems like a pretty great thing?' she asked.

Studio 10 host Sarah Harris snorted in response and tried to suppress her laughter as she covered her face with her notes.

Her co-host Tristan MacManus made a nervous expression as Ryan began to chuckle awkwardly.

'He's never played one!' Harris said to Exelby, who later claimed she thought he'd played in the 2014 State of Origin.

'That's it, uh, thank you for that, Tash,' Ryan replied. 'Thanks for bringing it up, took me seven years to get over it.'

After asking the former footy player again if he'd played in one, Ryan responded: 'No, I didn't. No, it's very political, rugby league, as you know, like the rest of life.'

'But yeah, we've got to move on anyway,' he continued. 'Thanks for that, Tash. We'll catch up with you... later tonight.'

As the trio continued chatting about his NRL career, Ryan amusingly tried calling out to Studio 10 presenter Narelda Jacobs before realising she was on leave.

Later in the show, Natasha jokingly apologised on air for her blunder.

'As a journalist, a serious journalist, I pride myself on always getting the facts right - and today, I failed you, because I mistakenly reported that Beau Ryan once played in a State of Origin when, in actual fact, he was never within spitting distance,' she said.

Despite the brutal sledge, Ryan laughed it off as 'banter'.
