Churachandpur, December 01 2021: State BJP executive member and ex-CEO of Churachandpur ADC Henlianthang Thanglet, while announcing his intention to contest the forthcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly election 2022 from Singhat (Singngat) constituency, has spelt out his main political agenda which included demand for Territorial Council, empowerment of Autonomous District Council and protection of tribals' land rights.
Henlianthang made the announcement during a public meeting conducted as part of his first phase poll campaign, starting from Behiang T village to Singngat market area, on Wednesday.
Disclosing the reasons for his decision to contest in the forthcoming election, Henlianthang stressed that the tribal people need to take proactive steps to protect their lands as the present ADC is neither under the 5 th nor the 7th schedule of the Indian constitution, calling it "just a council or a grant-in-aid".
He further said that ADC is not capable of protecting the tribal rights over land and providing the needs and aspirations of the tribal populace in this part of the land.
Henlianthang then said that the UPF of SoO groups demanded the southern territorial council for which he is a member of the draft committee and knows very well about what is inclusive and exclusive of the draft.
He then said that if he gets elected as an MLA, he would be able to play an effective role in raising the issues of the tribals and play an effective role in impressing upon the state and central governments on the need for extension of southern territorial council.
The MLA aspirant went on to say that the SoO groups prepared a draft in the name of southern territorial council and after it was submitted to the government, talks are on with the SoO group leaders and leaders of the central government.
Other development schemes under the flagship programmes of the state and central governments are bound to come on their own but such a government mechanism needs to be installed to protect the rights of tribals, especially in the southern districts, he added.
Henlianthang urged the people not to stop extending support to the BJP in order to hasten extension of the demand for southern territorial council.
He added that Singhat is a God-given land for the Zo descendants and made an appeal to the people to remain united to defend it.
