New Delhi: Parmjeet Kumar became the first Indian para-powerlifter to win a medal in the World Championships as he claimed a bronze at the ongoing edition in Tbilisi, Georgia. Kumar, who trains at the Sports Authority of India centre in Gandhinagar, won the bronze in the men’s 49kg category with an effort of 158kg.

Manika crashes out of TT World Championships

Houston: Manika Batra failed to bag a medal at the World Table Tennis Championships after crashing out in the quarterfinals of the mixed and women’s doubles events here. Just one win away from a historic medal, Batra and G Sathiyan lost to Japan’s Tomakazu Harimoto and Hina Hayata (5-11 2-11 11-7 9-11) in the mixed doubles competition. In the women’s doubles quarterfinals, Batra and Archana Kamath were no match for Luxembourg’s Sarah De Nutte and Ni Xia Lian, losing 1-11 6-11 8-11. pti
