Imphal, November 27 2021: Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has urged the Government to give adequate ex-gratia to the kin of those who died of COVID-19 .
Addressing media persons at his official residence at Babupara today, O Ibobi continued that a memorandum has already been submitted to the Chief Minister for the cause.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on March 14, 2020 had directed the Government to give an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of those who died of COVID-19 under National Disaster Management Authority, the CLP leader said and added that 75 percent of the amount has to be borne by the Central Government while the remaining 25 percent is State share.
Unfortunately, the amount submitted to the Supreme Court by the Centre on September 11 last as detailed affidavit for paying ex-gratia is only Rs 50,000, he said and urged the Centre to stick to Rs 4 lakh as directed by the MHA earlier.
The former Chief Minister also appealed to the Government to furnish the actual figure of those who died due to Covid at private hospitals and Government health care facilities.
"Nobody wants the ex-gratia but those who died due to the contagion should be compensated duly," Ibobi said.
