World Cup qualifying play-off draw, LIVE: Scotland and Wales will discover their route to Qatar as they desperately hope to avoid Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and European champions Italy

  • Wales and Scotland are into the play-off section of the World Cup qualifiers
  • Duo are boosted with home semi-final draws as seeded teams after group stage
  • But nightmare fixtures against Portugal and Italy could still linger in their path
  • England have already reached the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after topping group

The World Cup is on the horizon for Scotland and Wales as they look to find out who they will have to face to secure a spot in next winter's finals in Qatar.

Both sides earned a play-off place courtesy of finishing runners-up in their qualifying group as they look to join rivals England who having already topped their group have already qualified for the tournament.

With a home semi-final and final to be played, the Home Nations could still yet face each other as they go into a 12-team draw to decide the remaining three European places.

Follow all the build up, how the format will be conducted and the draw itself from 3pm with DAN RIPLEY.

That leaves 12 countries battling for three places

From those 10 group winners come 10 runners-up and that's where our focus is today.

Wales and Scotland came through their groups in second place and they are joined by the likes of giants Portugal and Italy as well as Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Poland, North Macedonia and Ukraine.

Completing the 12 are Austria and Czech Republic who while not securing a play-off spot via their groups, do make the cut as the two best Nations League group winners from last year who had not already qualified or earned a play-off spot.

These countries will now battle each other to earn a place at Qatar.

So, who already has their feet up and on the plane to Qatar next year?

Joining the host nation Qatar are Brazil and Argentina who have already secured their passage through the South American qualifiers early doors.

Meanwhile 10 of Europe's 13 qualifiers have also been decided having won their qualifying groups and they include England (of course) Germany, Denmark, France, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Serbia, Switzerland and Holland.

So we have still only got clarification of half the teams who will feature in Qatar.
