The India A bowlers had a tough time on the field as Pieter Malan and Tony de Zorzi scored centuries to take South Africa A to 343 for three at stumps on day one of the opening unofficial Test on Tuesday.
After opting to bowl, the Priyank Panchal-led side got two early wickets before Malan (157 batting off 258 balls) and Zorzi (117 off 186) shared a 217-run stand for the third wicket to put South Africa A in a strong position in the four-day game.
Pacer Navdeep Saini, who has lost his place in the Indian team, took a wicket and so did left-arm speedster Arzan Nagwaswalla and Umran Malik, who was picked in the A squad after impressing with his extra pace in the IPL.
All the three spinners — Rahul Chahar, K Gowtham and Baba Aparajith — failed to pick up a wicket. Chahar, who was part of the recent home T20 series against New Zealand, conceded 75 runs in 19 overs.
The three-match series is being scheduled ahead of the senior team’s tour of South Africa beginning next month. Opener Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari, who was controversially not picked for the two home Tests against New Zealand, are also part of the squad.

Toss Update: India A have won the toss and have opted to bowl first
IND-A vs SA-A LIVE: With India all set to tour South Africa later this year, many of the India A players will hope to make an impression as they embark on a three-match series starting on Tuesday. Led by Priyank Panchal, the squad boasts of a host of Indian superstars, with many who have already made their debuts for India or have starred in the IPL or the domestic circuit.
In Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari and Navdeep Saini, the side have three players who have already played Test cricket for India, while the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, Ishan Kishan, Rahul and Deepak Chahar are all superstar names in themselves. Vihari particularly will be keen to showcase his mettle after being ignored for the home tests against New Zealand despite completing his recovery from the hamstring injury that he battled through to save the Test match at Sydney earlier this year.
“We have a very balanced side and following our processes correctly will get us the best results. It is definitely going to be an exciting tour for all of us. We have prepared very well, and we are looking forward to the series,” said India A skipper Priyank Panchal in a statement.
IND-A vs SA-A LIVE: South Africa A squad features a mixture of experienced and emerging talents, with in-form players from the domestic scene given an opportunity to stake their claim for Proteas selection. The likes of Beran Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Migael Pretorius and Luthi Sipamla are some of the big names on the side, along with George Linde and Senuran Muthusamy who toured Indi in 2019.
“As a side, our number one priority is to win. At an individual level, that means putting in performances that will help move the team forward and hopefully we can achieve that on the field,” said South Africa A skipper Pieter Malan.
