CHENNAI: After a brief respite, heavy rainfall may be back over the city and its suburbs this weekend as the met department has issued an orange alert - very heavy rainfall - on November 27 and 28.
The weather agency said the cyclonic circulation persisting over south Bay of Bengal up to 4.5km in altitude is likely to intensify into a low pressure area in the next 24 hours. The system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and south Tamil Nadu coast.
N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, India Meteorological Department, said while a few southern coastal districts and delta districts may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next two days, the rainfall activity may shift to northern districts including Chennai and neighbouring Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet. Earlier, IMD had issued an orange alert for the city and neighbouring districts from November 26.
"The system was likely to move west-northwestwards, but it is stationary over the sea. So, the rainfall activity may also change according to its movement. Hence, we changed the dates for orange alert," he said in a press meet on Wednesday afternoon.
The IMD official also said though the system is stationary over the sea, it may not intensify beyond low pressure as it is in a lower latitude and its wind speeds may also reduce once it moves towards Sri Lanka.
While the city and the suburbs remained largely dry with the Sun out in the last two days, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain to occur over some areas in the next 48 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures may be around 32C and 25C.
Blogger Pradeep John, in one of his online posts, said the rainfall from the low pressure may not be a short intense spell of rain but may spread over a few days.
