SL vs WI 1st Test, Day 4 Stumps: Sri Lanka 4 wickets away from victory – Sri Lanka are just 4 wickets away from registering a dominant victory in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. Having set a target of 348 runs, the host reduced Windies to 18/6 in the 12th over. However, Joshua De Silva (15*) & N Bonner (18*) denied Sri Lanka for further damage. Ramesh Mendis wreaked havoc as he dismissed visitors top-order and West Indies was looking completely down and out. Joshua Da Silva and Nkrumah Bonner then revived the innings for Windies and both batters grinded it out in the middle. Bad light forced an early end to Day 4 and the hosts are just four wickets away from victory.

Earlier, after gaining a lead of 156, Sri Lanka got off to a bad start as Pathum Nissanka (3) departed cheaply off the bowling of Rahkeem Cornwall. Oshada Fernando (14) also did not manage to stay at the crease for a long haul, but Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews took Sri Lanka to the lunch interval and the hosts had eight wickets in hand, with the lead extended to 240.

Karunaratne went on to score 83 while Mathews remained unbeaten on 69 as Sri Lanka declared their innings at 191/4, setting West Indies a target of 348.

Earlier, resuming Day 4 at 224/9, overnight batters Joshua Da Silva and Shannon Gabriel did not manage to stay at the crease for a long haul as the latter was dismissed by Praveen Jayawickrama, and Windies innings folded for 230, giving hosts a lead of 156 runs.

Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder provided a tidy start to the visitors on Day 3 but Sri Lanka came back nicely removing both the batters before lunch and have reduced the visitors to 224/9 in the second session.

Sri Lanka took control of the first Test against West Indies after the visiting batters displayed a lacklustre performance on Day 2 at the Galle International Stadium on Monday. After Roston Chase’s 5/83 brought West Indies back into the game, restricting Sri Lanka to 386, the visitors could only manage 113/6 at the end of Day 2’s play.

SL vs WI 1st Test, Day 3 Stumps: Rain curtails Day 3 in Galle as West Indies still trail Sri Lanka by 162 runs; WI 224/9

At stumps, West Indies’ score read 224/9 — still trailing by 162 runs. For the hosts, Joshua Da Silva (11*) and Shannon Gabriel (0*) are currently unbeaten. Resuming Day 3 on 113/6, overnight batters Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder managed to add 50 more runs to the total before Mayers (45) was sent back to the pavilion by Dhananjaya de Silva. Soon after, Holder (36) also perished off the bowling of Praveen Jayawickrama, and Windies was reduced to 175/8 in the 61st over.

Rahkeem Cornwall and Joshua Da Silva then got together at the crease and the duo put on 49 runs for the ninth wicket, but as soon as Windies started to gain some momentum, Cornwall (39) was sent back to the pavilion by Suranga Lakmal.

After Cornwall’s dismissal, rain played spoilsport and play did not resume, and as a result, umpires had to call for early stumps.

Praveen Jayawickrama celebrates after his long spell resulted in a wicket, Sri Lanka vs West Indies, 1st Test, Galle, 2nd day, November 22, 2021

Braithwaite (41) tried his best to survive but his resistance finally ended in the 32nd over as he was sent back to the pavilion by Ramesh Mendis. Windies innings further went into a slump as Shai Hope (10) and Jomel Warrican (1) departed cheaply. In the end, Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder ensured that the visitors do not lose any more wickets before stumps on Day 2.

Earlier, resuming Day 2 on 267/3, Sri Lanka did not manage to show the same resistance as the opening day and the hosts kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Once Dimuth Karunaratne (147) was sent back, what followed was a procession and in the end, the hosts were bowled out for 386. For West Indies, Roston Chase returned with five wickets.

SL vs WI 1st Test, Day 1 Stumps: Sri Lanka in command – Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne’s unbeaten ton and fifties from Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva have helped Sri Lanka get off to a dominant start in the ongoing first Test against West Indies here at the Galle International Stadium on Sunday. At Day 1 Stumps, Sri Lanka’s score reads 267/3– with Karunaratne (132*) and Dhananjaya (56*) unbeaten at the crease.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne provided an ideal start to the hosts as the duo saw out the opening session. Both batters saw out 27 overs in the first session, scoring 61 runs.

SL vs WI 1st Test, Day 2 Stumps: Ramesh Mendis scalps 3 to put Sri Lanka in command on Day 2; WI 113/6

Nissanka and Karunaratne started from their left off and the duo brought up the 100-run opening stand in the 39th over of the innings. Both batters went past their half-century mark, but the 139-run opening stand was finally broken by Shannon Gabriel as he dismissed Nissanka (56) in the 50th over. Oshada Fernando (3) failed to leave a mark as he was sent back to the pavilion by Roston Chase and Sri Lanka was reduced to 164/2.

Angelo Mathews (3) also departed cheaply as he was dismissed by Chase, but Karunaratne marched on and the skipper went on to register the three-figure mark. In the end, Karunaratne and Dhananjaya ensured that the hosts do not suffer more hiccups before the close of play on Day 1.
