What is Griha Pravesh?

A ‘Griha Pravesh’ puja is performed before moving into a new house. Griha Pravesh is made of two words – ‘griha’, which means a house and ‘pravesh’, which means to enter. The puja is done to get rid of any ill effects and Vastu dosha from the house. The Griha Pravesh puja also enhances positive aura at home by cleansing and purifying the space. Griha Pravesh puja is performed by the occupants of the house to seek divine blessings for peace and prosperity.

A Grah pravesh or a house warming ceremony, is performed only once for a home. So, it is essential to take care of every detail, to avoid mistakes. If you have recently bought a home, you will need to select the right date for the ceremony. In Hindu tradition, specific days are mentioned in the Hindu calendar (Panchang), which are considered shubh (auspicious) to enter a new home. According to Vastu Shastra, performing the Griha Pravesh puja on a shubh muhurat brings good luck into the lives of the occupants. It is better to plan the Griha Pravesh ceremony well in advance, to avoid problems in the last minute. Early planning can help you to lock in on the best Shubh Muhurat for your Griha Pravesh. date, ensure that your home is ready to be occupied. Ensure that the home is not vacant and someone from the family lives in it, immediately after the Grah pravesh ceremony.” Sethi suggests keeping the following points in mind, before doing the Grah pravesh:

  • Ensure that there is no dwar vedh (obstacle) in front of your home’s main entrance.
  • Decorate the main door with banana plant, mango leaves, fresh flowers and make a rangoli on the floor.
  • The main door is from where one invites prosperity and good vibes. So, hang mango leaves and a toran of flowers on it, as the main door is known as the simha dwara and is the archway to progress and positive energy. Always draw Lakshmi feet stepping inside the house on the threshold. Draw swastika and om on the the outer side of the wall.
  • Keep the house neat and clean on the day of the Griha Pravesh.
  • Light up the house and use flowers for fragrance, while decorating the home.
  • Perform the Griha Pravesh during the exact muhurat recommended by the astrologer/expert.
  • Prior to entering into the home, break a coconut which denotes elimination of all hurdles.
  • Always put the right foot forward while entering the house, as this symbolises prosperity.
  • Griha Pravesh puja is done to protect against negative vibrations and to create a peaceful ambiance. The Griha Pravesh ceremony includes a havan, Ganesh puja, Navagraha Shanti and Vastu puja.

Due to Coronavirus pandemic, you may perform the Griha Pravesh with your family members only. Once the lockdown is lifted completely, you can invite relatives and friends and, organise a big party on another date, as per your convenience.
