A massive fire has broken out at a plastics factory near Hull sending large plumes of smoke miles into the air. 

Emergency services have warned residents to keep their doors and windows closed as they respond to the incident believed to be at the Bridgewood Plastics factory on an industrial estate in Hessle, East Yorkshire.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said they were in attendance and added: 'Please avoid the Priory Way to A63 area and be mindful there is a large amount of smoke in the area and surrounding roads.'

Locals have reported hearing loud bangs and one resident said coal had landed in their garden as Humberside Police also warned members of the public to avoid the area.

A number of houses on Buttfield Road and a nearby supermarket are being evacuated, the BBC reported.

Cory Simmonds, 27, was told by the police to leave his home on Ferry Road.

'We were very close, it's awful, the fire is just raging. The smoke that came off from it, was thick, black smoke.

'There were bangs going off and the house was literally shaking. The windows were moving when the bangs were going off, it was quite awful really.'

Footage posted to social media showed flames near residential housing, with a large plume of smoke rising into the sky.

Grace Grant, 25, said that she heard explosions coming from the fire.

'It was huge, smoke could be seen from miles away. As I moved off, explosions were happening around every ten seconds', she said.

Local pubs in the area, including The Fiveways and The Norland, said they would offer free drinks to those affected by the fire

The Fiveways posted to Facebook saying: 'We are happy to provide free hot drinks and shelter to those affected by the fire in Hessle. Free hot drinks to emergency workers.'

Another pub, The Norland, posted: 'We are aware that a number of locals have no power so we will remain open for drinkers free tea and coffee available.'
