A man charged in a head-on collision that killed a passenger in his car in Kent in October has had his request for a modified bond denied.

On Thursday, the attorney for Charles G. Mason Jr., 60, of West Shore Drive in Kent, filed a motion to modify Mason’s $200,000 bond due to Mason testing negative for drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash, according to Portage County Court of Common Pleas records. Judge Becky Doherty, however, denied the motion during a bond hearing on Friday.

Kent police said a Toyota Camry that Mason was driving westbound on Lake Street drifted over the center line and continued in the wrong lane until it crashed into a stopped eastbound semi-trailer truck during the late morning Oct. 15. Kathryn Elizabeth Krise, the passenger, suffered severe injuries and was trapped for a period of time.

Kent EMS freed her and both she and Mason were taken to Summa Akron City Hospital, where Krise died. Mason reportedly suffered minor injuries.

A grand jury indicted Mason on charges of first- and second-degree felony aggravated vehicular homicide; carrying a concealed weapon and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, both fourth-degree felonies, in connection with a loaded handgun allegedly found in the Camry; and first-degree misdemeanor driving under suspension.

Mason is scheduled for a Dec. 14 jury trial and a Nov. 30 pretrial hearing.
