Former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Tanwar, who quit the Congress just before the Haryana assembly elections in October 2019, is one of several prominent faces joining the TMC on Tuesday. Among other prominent faces who joined the party on the same day were former cricketer Kirti Azad, a fellow Congress leader, and former diplomat-turned-politician Pavan K Varma.

Tanwar joins a long list of leaders joining the Trinamool Congress, the most prominent among them being Yashwant Sinha, a minister in the Vajpayee cabinet and a BJP rebel, singer-turned politician Babul Supiryo, a former minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, and former Congress chief minister of Goa Luizinho Faleiro.

When he quit the Congress in 2019, Tanwar claimed there was a conspiracy to target leaders groomed by Rahul Gandhi and had said he felt morally obliged to resist and expose that onslaught.

Tanwar had then tied up with the Dushyant Chautala-led JJP for state Assembly polls in 2019.
