A special court in Coimbatore on Tuesday sentenced a man and a woman to ten years rigorous imprisonment for cheating 99 depositors of Rs 1.55 crore. The court acquitted six others accused in the case.

An inter ministerial central team deputed by the Home Ministry visited rain ravaged villages in Puducherry on Tuesday.The team led by Joint Secretary to the Ministry Rajiv Sharma also visited coastal villages and wrapped up its two-day tour here and left for neighbouring Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. Speaker of Puducherry Assembly R Selvam explained to the team the unprecedented havoc the floods had caused in several villages in Manavely area.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday signed MoUs with 59 companies attracting investments to the tune of Rs 35,208 crore across the state. These include MoUs with seven companies for aerospace and defence systems manufacturing at an investment of Rs 485 crore. Full story here

A fisherman of Pudukottai district went missing after the boat in which he had gone for fishing on Monday night overturned in strong winds. Two fishermen, K. Ganeshan (45) and L. Manimuthu (42) had gone for fishing in a fibre boat from Kottaipattinam village in Pudukottai district. The boat owned by Ganeshan was not registered with the fisheries department.

The dairy farmers of Tamil Nadu are elated over the state government's decision to include ghee products made by the Aavin milk cooperative society, in gift hampers to be given to ration cardholders during Pongal. The announcement on Monday comes as the state-back cooperative society has been incurring losses since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.

A flood monitoring team deputed by the Centre visited Chennai on Monday. It inspected Veerachetty Road, Pullianthope High Road and Jawahar Nagar in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Alagappa Road in Royapuram area. The team was headed by joint secretary and financial advisor, National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), Rajiv Sharma.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday morning opened one shutter of Mullaperiyar dam due to rising water levels in the reservoir following heavy rains there, the district administration here said.Tamil Nadu had announced it would be raising the shutter at 8.00 AM by 30 centimetre to release 397 cusecs of water, a release by the Idukki District administration said and asked residents on both sides of the Periyar to be vigilant.The water level in the reservoir at 8.00 AM had reached 141.40 feet.

The city of Madurai is facing a peculiar law and order issue with a war between gangs that is leading to a chain of murders one after another as retaliation and revenge, the Madras high court has observed.A division bench of justices S Vaidyanathan and G Jayachandran made the observation while dismissing the habeas corpus petitions filed to quash the detention orders of four people - Dineshkumar, Alex, Alaguraja and Raja who are detained under the Goondas Act. A school student committed suicide in Pollachi on Sunday after his mother refused to hand him over her mobile phone to play an online game.The Class-IX boy of a government school in Pollachi had surgery for appendicitis two months ago and was taking rest in home since then, according to a complaint lodged by boy’s mother with the Pollachi west police. Fifteen years ago, the city corporation desilted a pond at Urumandampalayam with the participation of locals.Today, the same pond is nowhere to be seen. Poor maintenance, rampant encroachments and letting out of sewage water from nearby residential areas have literally vanished the pond. The Union Territory of Puducherry reported 17 fresh cases even as 36 patients recovered in the last 24 hours ending at 10 am on Monday bringing down the active cases to 304 on Saturday.Of them, 250 patients are under home isolation and treatment. The territory did not report any Covid-19 deaths and the toll remained at 1,870.
