An Orange City woman, who worked as a library assistant for Volusia County, was fatally shot in a road rage incident on Saturday, police said.

The incident happened on Saturday shortly after 5:14 p.m., said Orange City police Lt. Jason Sampsell.

Volusia County spokesman Kevin Captain identified the woman as Sara Morales, a library assistant. Captain said Morales’ death has prompted the temporary closure of the DeLand and Pierson libraries to allow staff to grieve.

According to Orange City police, the incident began at 5:14 p.m. Saturday when police got 9-1-1 calls of a hit-and-run crash.

Police learned that a blue Kia hit a motorcycle and fled the scene in the 1400 block of N. Volusia Ave. The motorcyclist and other witnesses followed the vehicle to the intersection of 17-92 and Wisconsin Avenue, where the motorcyclist and witnesses told the driver of the blue Kia, later identified as Morales, 35, to stop because police had been called, Sampsell said.

Morales continued driving and stopped at 1052 E. Wisconsin Ave., where a confrontation took place in the roadway, police said.

Morales was shot multiple times. She was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she died of her injuries, Sampsell said,

“The investigation into the shooting is on-going and no one has been charged at this point in time,” Sampsell said.
