Heimgartner leads wet Supercars qualifying
New Zealander Andre Heimgartner has emerged with provisional pole position as rain caused plenty of problems ahead of Sunday's Supercars endurance race in Sydney.
Heimgartner (NED Racing) was able to navigate the wet conditions at Sydney Motorsport Park as multiple drivers spun out into turn one's barriers with standing water and rivers aplenty during the qualifying one session.
"Luckily we had the running last week and that sort of set me up good so I knew what I needed to do from the first lap," Heimgartner told Fox Sports ahead of the Top Ten Shootout.
"Was just able to execute it and tyre pressure was just right... but yeah, turn one is the only sketchy place - apart from that it's all pretty good."
Championship leader and fellow Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen was second fastest, with teammate Jamie Whincup able to score seventh even after crashing into the barriers after his hot lap.
It was a difficult session for Sydney's form driver in Anton De Pasquale, who could only muster 17th on the grid for Sunday's race.
Qualifying in the Top Ten Shootout begins at 12.30pm (AEDT) before the final race of four weeks of competition in Sydney gets underway at 3.15pm.
