7-member Central team arrives in TN to assess rain, flood damages

Chennai, Nov 21 (UNI) The Central team deputed by the Union Government
landed in Tamil Nadu on Sunday to assess the damages caused by last
week's heavy rains and floods and make recommendation on the quantum
of assistance to the state.
The inter-Ministerial Central team will ascertain whether floods in the State
can be considered to be of a ‘severe nature’ and make recommendations
for additional Central assistance to the State.
The team, led by Rajiv Sharma, Joint Secretary, NATGRID, Ministry of Home
Affairs, consists of Mr R B Kaul, Consultant, Ministry of Finance, Department
of Expenditure, Mr Vijay Rajmohan, Director (IT), Department of Agriculture,
Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, Mr R Thangamani, Director, Ministry of
Water Resources, Central Water Commission, Chennai, Ms Bhaavya Pandey,
Assistant Director, Ministry of Power, CEa, Sewa Bhavan, Mr Rananjay Singh,
Regional Officer, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Mr MVN Vara
Prasad, Under Secretary (RH), Ministry of Rural Development.
Soon after their arrival, the team members held preliminary discussions
with Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu at the State Secretariat and later visited
the Greater Chennai Corporation office at Ripon Buildings where
Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi explained the damages caused by
extremely heavy rains and floods in the city and suburbs.
The team will split into two groups and visit the flood and rain affected
districts tomorrow and the day after, before holding discussions with
Chief Minister M K Stalin on November 24.
The team will leave for Delhi after the meeting with Chief Minister and
submit a report to the Centre detailing the damages and recommend
necessary assistance.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran said
tomorrow one team will visit and assess flood damages in Chennai and
neighbouring Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts.
Another team would visit Kanyakumari the same day. On November 23,
one team will visit Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam
and Tiruvarur districts, while another team will tour Vellore and Ranipet
districts.
Additional Chief Secretary Phaneendra Reddy and Principal Secretary
Kumar Jayant will accompany one team each and guide them during
the inspections, Mr Ramachandran said.
“We have instructed District Collectors to take the teams to the most
affected areas and also get them to interact with flood affected people.
MLAs, MPs and farmers’ associations, cutting across political lines,
have also been asked to meet the Central teams and apprise them
of the damages caused to standing crops and road infrastructure,”
he said.
The Revenue Minister said the State have initially sought an assistance
of Rs 2,629.29 crore and urged the Centre to immediately release
Rs 549 crore in the first phase..
