NET questions in Bengali script peeves DESAM

Imphal, November 20 2021: The Democratic Students' Allian-ce of Manipur (DESAM) has asked why the NET question set for Manipuri subject was printed in Bengali alphabet instead of Meitei Mayek this year.

Speaking to media persons at Kwakeithel today, DESAM vice-president Oinam Shital said that the Manipur Official Language Act was amended by the State Government to include Meitei Mayek in the official list on March 4, 2021 .

Saying that many students who could not read Bengali scripts were not able to give the exam due to this 'blunder', Shital asked Manipur University and the department concerned to take responsibility for wasting time and money of many Meitei Mayek students and giving them mental harassment.

He also asked on what rationale the authority concerned was setting the question in Bengali script even when many who took Meitei Mayek as a subject applied for the examination.

Further stating that such a big blunder should not be closed discreetly, Shital urged the Government to investigate and fix responsibility to the guilty.

Shital also said that today's exam should be made invalid and the same examination should be re-conduc- ted in the interest of all the Meitei Mayek students.

He also cautioned the authority concerned to take responsibility for all eventualities if the exam result is declared without re-conducting the Manipuri exam.

Continuing that not a single sanctioned post and teachers have also been recruited for the MEd course at DM College of Teacher Education (DMCTE) till date, Shital claimed that the college has also not yet submitted the Performance Appraisal Report (PAR) of NCTE due to shortage of teachers.

The report should be submitted by January 2022, he said and claimed that many other DIET centres in Mani-pur haven't submitted the PAR due to certain inadequacy.

The fate of the only BEd college and other DIET centres might be at stake if the report is not submitted, Shital cautioned and urged the Government to either abolish the college and centres or intervene and do the needful.

A Government could be formed in a day but recruiting eligible teachers of BEd College would take time , the DESAM vice-president said and urged the State Government to fill up all the vacant posts of teachers and make the college a full fledged one.

Shital then cautioned that the DESAM would file a petition at the High Court if the authority concerned doesn't give any positive response at the earliest.
