MUMBAI: Mumbai has ranked 37th in the nationwide sanitation survey --
Swachh Survekshan 2021 -- which is conducted by the
Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs every year.
Mumbai's ranking this year fell compared to last year when it had ranked 35th out of the 48 odd cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. Mumbai, meanwhile, has also won an award for the best mega city in innovation and best practices.
The satellite township Navi Mumbai meanwhile ranked fourth which is one rank below last year where it had ranked third. Meanwhile Navi Mumbai, which ranked third last year has this year ranked 4th. Thane, another city in the MMR region has ranked 14th this year maintaining its same position as that of last year. A total of 10 cities in the state have featured on the list apart from Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai. Pune for instance has ranked 5th, Aurangabad 22nd, Nagpur 23, Kalyan Dombivli 25, Vasai Virar 29, Nashik 17, Pimpri Chinchwad 19.
Deputy municipal commissioner in charge of solid waste Sangeeta Hasnale said that the award for best mega city in innovation and best practices was for the various projects the
BMC has undertaken like converting waste to cooking gas and also encouraging compost pits in housing societies for treating garbage. On the overall ranking having slipped Hasnale said that owing to covid they were unable to represent the city well enough.
"Our focus was much on fighting the virus and therefore we were unable to represent the city upto the mark," she said.
As per the final results, Mumbai scored 2,021 out of the total of 6,000 marks. In 2020, 3,106.39 out of the total of 6,000 marks and in 2019, the city had scored 3,277 out of 5,000, according to the data.
