AMRAVATI: In a move towards normalcy, police on Friday announced a nine-hour
relaxation in
curfew here from 9am on Saturday. The curfew had been imposed after clashes during protests over alleged desecration of a holy book in
Tripura.
There will continue to be night curfew from 6pm of Saturday till 9am of Sunday, Aarti Singh, commissioner of police, said. On Friday, the city reported no violence of any kind for the sixth day since November 13. The process of identifying and arresting the accused is underway. Police have so far arrested 298 persons, including 20 arrested on Friday. The number of offences have gone up from 35 to 53, says a police release.
Police have also set up a social media monitoring cell to keep a close watch on posts appearing on various social media platforms. Singh urged group administrators to ensure that no provocative posts, false messages or rumours that would threaten law and order, or provoke people, are circulated on their groups by any member. "All such posts are banned under the
Maharashtra Police Act and offences under sections 140 of MP Act and Sections 505, 295 (a), 153 and 153(a) would be registered against the concerned," the order said.
Though curfew in the day time has been relaxed, there is no clarity in the order as to what kind of businesses would be able to open their shops on Saturday.
