Nov. 18—The driver accused of hitting and injuring a cyclist in Longmont in May accepted a plea deal in his case and was sentenced to probation and work release.

Brian Charles Albion Stine, 39, pleaded guilty Thursday in Boulder District Court to conspiracy to commit vehicular eluding, a Class 6 felony.

Stine was sentenced to two years of probation and 180 days of work release, according to online court records.

Prosecutors dismissed one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury as part of the plea deal.

According to an affidavit, at 9:24 p.m. May 28, a woman was riding a bicycle in Longmont when she began to cross north on Longs Peak Avenue at Main Street against the red pedestrian crossing signal.

When the light for westbound traffic on Longs Peak Avenue turned green, a Dodge Caravan drove through the intersection and struck the cyclist, who suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury.

The driver stopped, but fled the scene on foot before police arrived, leaving behind a passenger who identified Stine as the driver.

Police contacted Stine the next day, and he admitted to being the driver. He said he was driving from Pumphouse Brewery when he went through the intersection at a green light and felt his vehicle hit something.

Stine said he stopped the vehicle and got out, but said people began yelling at him and he got scared and fled to his grandmother's house. He told police he did not call in the crash because his phone was in the car, but he admitted his grandmother had a phone.

Stine initially denied having anything to drink before the crash, but then admitted to having a beer with his dinner before the crash, according to the affidavit.
