In an address to the nation at 9 am today, PM Modi announced a repeal of the three farm laws.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation today, announced that the three contentious farm laws introduced in 2020 will be repealed.

"We haven't been able to explain to our farmers. This is not a time to blame anyone. I want to tell you that we have taken the farm laws back," said the Prime Minister, urging farmers to return to their homes and fields.

The decision comes as farmers' protests are on the verge of completing a year, ahead of key state elections.

PM Modi said his government did its best to educate and inform the farmers about the laws and will continue to keep working for their betterment.

Supreme Court-appointed farm panel member Anil Ghanwat today described as regressive the Central government's decision to repeal the three farm laws which were at the centre of protests by farmers for the past year.

"This is the most regressive step by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he chose politics over farmers' betterment," Mr Ghanwat told news agency Press Trust of India.

"Our panel had submitted several corrections and solutions over the three farm laws, but instead of using it to solve the impasse, PM Modi and BJP chose to backtrack. They just want to win elections and nothing else," Mr Ghanwat said.

"The Prime Minister of India Mr Narendra Modi announced the Government of India's decision to repeal all three anti-farmer, pro-corporate black laws first brought in as Ordinances in June 2020. He chose to announce this on Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Samyukt Kisan Morcha welcomes this decision and will wait for the announcement to take effect through due parliamentary procedures. If this happens, it will be a historic victory of the one year long farmers' struggle in India. However, nearly 700 farmers have been martyred in this struggle. The central government's obstinacy is responsible for these avoidable deaths, including the murders at Lakhimpur Kheri.

SKM also reminds the Prime Minister that the agitation of farmers is not just for the repeal of the three black laws, but also for a statutory guarantee of remunerative prices for all agricultural produce and for all farmers. This important demand of farmers is still pending. So also is the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill. SKM will take note of all developments, hold its meeting soon and announce further decisions."

Farm Laws: Satyagraha Defeated Arrogance, Says Rahul Gandhi On Farm Laws Climbdown
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is among several leaders who tweeted minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the three farm laws introduced last year will be cancelled.

Mr Gandhi, whose party is a fierce critic of the farm laws brought under controversial circumstances, appeared to lose no time in taking a swipe at PM Modi over the announcement to cancel the farm laws.

"The country's farmers have defeated arrogance with their satyagraha. Jai Hindi, Jai Hindi's farmers," Mr Gandhi tweeted, along with an old tweet from January this year where he said, "Mark my words, the government will have to take back the anti-farm laws."

Bharatiyan Kisan Union calls farm laws repeal "good move by PM Modi"
The Bharatiyan Kisan Union's (BKU) Ugrahan faction today welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to repeal the three contentious farm laws.

In his address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Modi said the three farm laws will be repealed in the coming Winter session of Parliament.
