Convicted killer Drew Peterson, who killed his third wife, maintains his missing fourth wife 'ran off' and that people are out looking for her in a 'place I know she's not.'
Peterson, a former police officer from Bolingbrook, Illinois, spoke to Dateline's Natalie Morales in an exclusive interview airing tonight at 9pm from inside the Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute in Indiana, where he moved to in 2017.
This is one of Morales' last interviews for NBC before she joins The Talk.
In a preview for Friday's episode, Peterson tells Morales: 'There's so much that hasn't been heard. Everybody on the opposition gets to talk, and I'm left in a cage.'
Peterson, 67, was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the 2003 murder of his third wife Kathleen Savio in 2013 and another 40 years in prison for plotting to kill James Glasgow, the prosecutor who helped put him behind bars, in 2016.
Peterson hasn't spoken about his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson for 10 years, but still maintains that she 'ran off.'
Stacy was 23 when she disappeared in 2007. It came four years after Savio was found dead in a bathtub.
The pair began dating when Stacy was only a teenager and while Peterson was still married to Savio.
'All these people are out looking for a place I know she's not,' he told Morales, who questioned how he knew.
'Well, unless someone else threw her in a field somewhere, then, but I didn't. So, why should I go look for-' he replied before Morales cut him off and asked again how he knew she wasn't there.
'I don't know. I don't know for sure, but I would believe she ran off' he replied.
He was convicted in 2013 and is not up for parole until 2047. In an exclusive interview with Dateline, airing tonight, Peterson said 'people are out looking for a place I know she's not.' Although he couldn't say how he knew, he said he 'believed' she 'ran off'

Stacy's sister Cassandra Cales said her sibling was 'my love, my friend, my mom, my best friend.'
Cales has vowed to keep looking for her sister at Lockport Canal in Illinois, where she claimed she found her sister's body earlier this year.
'I'm going to keep doing this every day I can until I die, until I can bring her home,' she said on a preview for Dateline.
Cales claimed to have a live video recording of skeletal remains in the canal in May, which she turned over to authorities. Five months later, Cales learned authorities didn't 'recover anything.'

Authorities 'cleared' the area, but Cales vowed she'd be back to the canal to keep looking.
'The area's clear to their standards, but I will be back,' she said at a press conference on October 19.
'Just because they say it's good, it's not good enough for me. If you want it done right, you've got to do it yourself. They had their chance.'
The family told Morales that they had 'dozens of people' combing through fields and using dogs to try and find Stacy, who still remains missing.

Stacy disappeared in 2007, four years after Kathleen Savio, Peterson's third wife, was found dead in a bathtub.
The pair began dating when Stacy was only a teenager, something Savio found out about after receiving an anonymous letter in the mail in 2001.
'She called me and she said, 'I got a letter, and it said– he was having an affair, and she was a laughingstock,' Sue Doman, Kathleen's sister, told Dateline.
'The thing that really stood out with Kathleen was that [Stacy] was a baby. She said, 'I don't understand why he would do this.''
Savio wanted a divorce following the revelation and demanded half the investment in the house and half of Peterson's pension.
During his trial, prosecutors claimed Peterson killed Savio because he feared their pending divorce settlement would wipe him out financially.

When Savio, 40, was found dead, she had a two-inch gash to the back of her head and the tub she was in was dry. But police at the time deemed her death an accident, believing she had slipped and fallen.
After Stacy disappeared, authorities became increasingly suspicious of Peterson.
Savio's body was exhumed and her death was reclassified as a homicide. Peterson was arrested in May 2009.
A friend testified that Savio told her Peterson once pointed a knife at her and said 'I could kill you and make it look like an accident.'
A former co-worker of Peterson's claimed that the cop had offered him $25,000 to hire a hitman to kill Savio, although he had never followed through.
Peterson was convicted in 2013 and due for parole in 2047 at age 93.
He moved was moved from a state prison in Menard to a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana in February 2017.
He said in 2019 that he is 'living the dream' ever since he was moved to a maximum-security federal prison.
'It was dirty. The mattresses I had, the pillow I had, you wouldn't put your dog on it,' he said about his old facility in Menard.
'It was terrible. Urine and defecation spread on the walls.'
'It was a horrible, horrible place. Then I come to the federal place and it's comparatively like a daycare center.'
Peterson said in 2019 that he is spending his days watching sitcoms and movies and making $20 a month working in the prison laundry.
He keeps up with his six children and follows politics.
